Brekkie at Spruce

Darlie got the message! We arrived at Spruce late sunday morning for a dose of good brunch to comfort myself for weeks of misfortune at work. I was more than thrilled when Mr. Darlie dropped hints that we are on our way. Darlie and I waited for a while at the reception area before getting a table, despite the advance reservation. Nevertheless, people-watching was enjoyable.

The open deck in Spruce looks like a canteen with hanging fans and traditional long tables, creating a laid-back atmosphere.

Brunch will never go wrong with eggs. I love them poached. The cinammon roll to share was a little too sweet. But I love the thick layer of cinammon coated in every bite.
My usual brunch companion :)
The food served was decent although I didnt get the chance to savour my preferred choice.. That most expensive set on the menu that Mr. D forbid me to order could have made me happier! haha..

Back to the 60's

I felt like I was brought back to the 60's when I stepped into the cafe, which was illuminated by the bright colours of decors and furniture pieces.

Seen often on magazines and newspapers, I decided to check out the flashy cafe one fine afternoon.

Caramel has a good mix of prints and colours on almost all decors found in it, and the brilliant thing is how these colours liven my mood, the same way its pretty little cupcake does. Unlike other dessert places that uses pure white dishes, this one serves its cakes and bakes on dissimiliar, yet well-mixed coloured crockery.

I am inspired by how they transformed second hand pieces of furnitures into what looked like brand new ones now.

The server recommended the cream cheese carrot cupcake and the caramel cupcake. I decided on the carrot one, which was interestingly spongy and moist, given its fibrous ingredient.

We spent the lazy afternoon (him) reading papers, (her) flipping through recipe books, and savouring cakes over tea.

Indeed, a wonderful afternoon.. ;)

Birthday, with bliss

9 Aug

It was a simple little date with Darlie - we met for brunch, followed by a movie, then he joined my family for a simple dinner. But I love how the day was spent. That's what I meant by quality time. :)

Braise. Decked on the 2nd floor overlooking the Palawan beach, this modern cafe introduces ease and comfort by using beigh, white and brown hues. Simplicity seems to be its theme. Nonetheless, Braise offers a wide selection of appetisers (in buffet style), eggs or pancakes, a main dish and dessert to complete the decadent meal. Other than free-flow juices, one can top up the bill to make it a champagne brunch.

Our favourite sides. Scallop with angel hair spaghetti. Darlie had 3 servings of this! Soup served in a cup.

One big disappointment of Braise is probably when the orders ran out. I ordered my favourite pancakes but the kitchen ran out of pancakes!! I had to change my order to crispy egg, which resembles a plaster prata. There were also other occassions when they ran out of watermelon juice, carrot juice etc..

Egg benedict on toast with hollandiase. Darlie says that the yolk wasnt runny.

His mains - duck confit with orange sauce

My mains - cod fish

And then finally desserts. We had the tiramisu and hot fudge chocolate cake.

I wouldnt mind going back again for more! ;)

Movie. The long-awaited animated film by Pixar, UP, was finally screened around that period and we grabbed the chance to watch it. Of course if there were other things to do, we would rather not watch a movie but since I have a pair of free movie ticket, why not? It was a heart-warming movie with few touching Ellie and Fredicksen scenes and funny occasions which usually involve Russell, the cute little boy. Thumbs up!

Dinner. We were still full by dinner time, but had to meet my family for dinner cos Dad & Mum would be travelling to Genting the day after. Nevertheless, it was a great dinner with everyone around..

The King of all fruits

turns out to be my favourite fruit too! And if you guessed it right, it's durian!!

Decided to celebrate Mich's birthday by treating her to the long awaited durian dessert buffet at Goodwood Park Hotel this season, and it never fails to deliver happiness each time we put one spoonful of that creamy yellowish thing into our month.

I love eating the fruit right from its shell at the road side of Geyland, Chinatown or Balestier even though it costs a bomb. And at the same time, I love savouring it with a pot of tea at some classy place after the fruit has been processed into a pretty slice of cake, a little tart or with a pancake. It's always so awesome.

Goodwood Park Hotel surely knows the way to pamper my stomach!

Yoshimaru Ramen Bar

The ramen bar originates from Hakata, Kyushu and was recently opened at Holland Village, managed by the Jumbo Seafood.

I had the Toasted Seaweed Ramen.

Tonkotsu broth over ultra thin, yet springy ramen with tender char siew pieces, crispy roasted seaweed, preserved vegetables and soft egg white with runny yolk.

Cute little Hakata Burger @ $8.80 for 3. Comes in Prawn mayo, Teriyaki Chicken, and Char Siew.

The teriyaki chicken one is our favourite.

Yoshimaru Ramen Bar. A hidden gem.

Oriole Cafe ****

I love brunch.

Just that we turned up late at 330pm cos we were too tired to climb out of bed early on a Saturday.

Tucked at the Pan Pacific Service Suite off Cineleisure, this cosy little cafe is just right for a weekend brunch. It is nicely-furbished and serves good food.

And they are very proud of the coffee they brew. Darlie ordered the Latte.

My portobello mushroom sandwich with poached egg.

Darlie's beef cheek pasta.

Both were to our liking. We initially found the portion too small to fill our stomach's content but it was gonna be dinner soon, anyway.

I heard it is opened by the former White Bait and Kale's owner.

I would love to be back again. And I gonna try their ice mocha.

Rose Veranda

The high tea was great. I like the variety of desserts they offered. They were so satisfying that I think they deserve a 4 our of 5. So good that I wouldnt touch any chocolates 3 days after that treat.

I must highlight that Rose Veranda pays very much attention to details. Even the napkins have their symbolic rose embroidery.

The floral prints on the tea set reminds me of the ones at Twelve+one.

The desserts that desserve all the attention..

Chocolate coated strawberries from the chocolate fountain.

When Tira meets Misu. :)

Dont really know what this is but I like the minty burst of flavour each time I took a bite. The other guis dont really like this, though..

My number 1 dessert of the year, so far. Panna Cotta. The carmelised sugar crystals with the soft custard underneath. Awesome.

I was very impressed with their tea selection too. All of us had a few choices in mind and couldnt decide on which to indulge first after we flipped through the tea menu. The tea selection comes in various types, like the floral ones, the fruity ones and the beautifying ones. I had love and beauty and sticked to it thoughout. One very good thing about Rose Veranda is that we could switch between the 102 different brews that they offer. So even if you picked the wrong tea, you could still make changes until you picked the right one for yourself.

The ambience wasnt what I expected, largely because the Chandelier (pronounced as Shan-de-lir according to Deex) wasnt the way I expected it to be from all the reviews I have read. Nevertheless, it was nice enough for the 5 of us to sit down and chat over cakes and tea. Of course, they have other food like dim sum, sandwiches and salads.

Hanging chandelier. The lighted ones would have enhanced the ambience.

Although the tea was good, I must highlight their lack of directories within the hotel premises. It was raining heavily that day and I managed to drive into their underground carpark only to realise that there isn't a sheltered path to the Hotel. I have to bear that $6 per entry carpark fee although my car was parked in there only for a bare 5 to 10 minutes. And during that 5 to 10 minutes, we were wandering around the carpark and the stairs trying to figure our way to the Hotel without getting wet. In the end, I had to drive out and enquire if they have car parks with sheltered walkway?!

As I was in a rush to meet Darlie for another family dinner, I left the guis first. Unfortunately at the exit, the reader says that the complimentary parking coupon has expired!! My cashcard was out of money and I had to reverse and request for the guis to get another complimentary ticket for me, only to find out that even the 2nd one has expired! I was pretty late already and such things have to happen to me!

Luckily, Darlie stays pretty nearby and I was able to reach on time. But he reprimanded me for being almost late infront of his mum. I thought he could have waited til we ended the dinner or something. Didnt even give me a chance to explain!

Breakfast at Rider's Cafe

I had wanted a picnic at the Marina Barrage today. But Darlie was in no mood for such a time consuming activity and he insisted we do something else. That something else was to have breakfast at Rider's Cafe..

Since young, I had never sat at my dining table and had home-made breakfast with my family like those I seen on TV. Breakfast was always on the go for me, like I would grab something and eat along my way. So the thought of sitting down and being served breakfast swept me off my feet. I will never say no when anyone ask me out for breakfast, even if it means to forsake my 8 hours of sleep.

Amidst of the lush greenery of Bukit Timah Saddle Club, the cafe has a good view that makes one sit back and relax while savouring your hearty breakfast. I had the Egg Florentine with spinach and muchrooms with breakfast potatoes, which cost about $11 (if I remember it correctly) and a cup of macchiatto (which I keep forgetting is espresso with milk!).

Thanks Darlie, for the breakfast treat! ;)

Twelve+One

This patisserie left a huge impression in me after I read its review on someone else's blog. The pastel pink and white motifs interior of the place draws most of my attention. Being a dessert lover, I took my chance to suggest this place for tea with Darlie. After much persuasion, his answer was a reluctant yes!

It was our first time at Rochester Park. Didnt expect it to be only a small stretch scattered with restaurants and pubs. Most of these restaurants were hidden behind the tall branches. We didnt even recognise Twelve+One till we walk in for a closer look.

The patisserie has tables indoor and outdoor. Admire the motifs on the walls if you decided to stay indoors. Otherwise, take a seat outdoor and be surrounded with flower pots hanged around the front porch.
If you had been out savouring desserts after desserts, you could have noticed that most patisseries like to serve their sweets on pure white glassware. This one is different. I personally like the flower prints embellished on the cups. Camomile Tea ($5).
Darlie ordered the Chocolate Eclair ($6). I'm not a big fan of chocolate eclairs but this one is pretty good. The chocolate creme in it was rich yet not 'gerlat' after several tries.
As I love something that belongs to the crunchy side, I ordered the Mistral ($7). The cake comes in layers - Pistacho creme, probably peach compote and almond biscuits that I could nibble on while savouring the layers altogether.
I'm addicted to Hi-teas.

Where I named a Food Paradise

It's none other than Hong Kong..

Day 1: Eating & shopping.

The long awaited visit to Fa Ji. Ting has been telling me how nice the durian soup is and I finally had the chance to try. We ordered everything with durian on the menu!
Durian mochi
Durian Pancake Durian Pastry
I was too busy indulging in the durian soup, I forgot to snap a picture of it.
Day 2: Went on a day tour
We had dinner at the Modern Toilet cafe, which after my first visit, decided it was over-hyped. The food taste bad. We even saw some people making faces as they chew on the food.
Day 3: Macau
Love eating desserts in Hong Kong!
Day 4: Tung Chung Station for Big Buddha & Shopping
People with passion and determination
The big Buddha
Learnt to appreciate tea ;)

Hong Kong.. I'll miss their dumpling noodles.
